This trailer for Madonna + The Breakfast Club is a preview of a 2019 documentary directed by Guy Guido, which stars Jamie Auld as Madonna. It follows the early days of Madonna, the “Queen of Pop,” with The Breakfast Club, before signing with a new band, Emmy and the Emmys. We see snippets of the band talking about Madonna as a drummer, where she would come out from behind to sing as a frontwoman for the band. She developed a persona, which was magnetic. Dan Gilroy, the band’s lead singer, remarks that Madonna “wanted it all,” and strove to get attention and gain prominence.

In the trailer, we hear Madonna (Auld) suggest that the band should be called just “Madonna.” This is reflective of Madonna. She wanted to be everywhere and the focal point of any group. After drumming for The Breakfast Club, Madonna sang for Emmy and the Emmys, which produced four hits before Madonna’s solo career.

This trailer also alludes to the fact that Madonna had a relationship with guitarist Dan Gilroy. During this relationship, Madonna stepped in as a vocalist for the band and discovered her talent. The trailer highlights emotional moments like when Madonna asks, “What am I doing, here?” Dan Gilroy, played by Calvin Knie, replies, “the band has no lead singer,” which implies that Madonna left the band in the 1980s to seek more fame. This trailer shows off the sexiness of Jamie Auld, who plays Madonna. Nonfics.com says Auld is “strikingly similar to the real deal.” She portrays fame-hungry Madonna, who ends up at odds with the Grammy-nominated band because she wanted more control. Overall, the documentary seems focused on the break between Madonna and the Breakfast Club. From band members’ accounts, the disconnect appears to result from personality differences between Gilroy and Madonna. Gilroy calls the documentary “a trip down memory lane.”
