The Artist Talks Transformation To A New Reality

British photographer Miles Aldridge is best known for his cinematic images of women, brightly lit with fluorescent colors that depict a glamorous and surreal world. Born in London in 1964, his father, Alan Aldridge, was a famed graphic designer and illustrator who created psychedelic artwork for books and record covers. The young Aldridge grew up surrounded by celebrities like John Lennon and Eric Clapton, and he cultivated an interest in pop culture and art. “In my images, the real and the imagined realms are constantly overlapping, meshing together to create a new reality,” said Aldridge in an interview with Forbes. “Moments glimpsed from life or remembered from my childhood are viewed through a filter of cinema and art and reimagined in the studios.”

In Photographers in Focus: Miles Aldridge, the artist reflects on his career bringing color to the world of fashion. He has long focused on how color can be used as a vibrant, rather than a simply naturalistic, medium. “Color photography represented the real world, but that black and white was somehow transformative and therefore art. My thought is it’s kind of worth challenging and so I challenged it.”

His images can unsettle as they can bring pleasure, with the models he shoots often caught in beguiling poses, wearing unorthodox expressions. “I am trying to present a fictional world that has more truth in it,” explains Aldridge.
