Moses Sumney is a North Carolina-born singer-songwriter whose first full-length album Aromanticism came out in 2017. His music is a blend of indie soul and art rock, with a strong emphasis on performance. He has toured with Thundercat and other prolific artists and his music has been part of TV series’ that include HBO’s late-night sketch series Random Acts of Flyness. He’s a musician, an artist and combines his fascination with making art and performing it on main stages.
Cut Me by singer-songwriter Moses Sumney is a visual tour de force of lyrical storytelling. It starts in an ambulance, going down the highway, carrying the musician himself. With a high vocal pitch, Sumney introduces his impressive track. Trumpets accompany the video as we transition from outside to inside a dance hall where Sumney stars in his production.
The design of each scene in this video is symmetrical and colorful. He creates a harmonious display with one set differing from the other. It’s vibrant, exciting and intriguing to see Sumney transition from an auditorium to a hospital to a funeral home in one continual sequence. Dances also accompany this delightful track. A woman, a man and Sumney dance in underwear as they move to a mix of hip-hop and R&B. The dancing is soulful and beautiful and fantastic to watch.
The video is written and directed by Sumney and the cinematography comes from Christina Dunlap. She has a compelling visual style, along with strong concepts for shots. Sumney is also a genius with a flair that overwhelms and enchants viewers. The producer is Whitney Jackson, who elevates the production value of this piece to astronomical heights.
