Out of the Blue
Living the Tat Dream to the Fullest

Out of the Blue is a documentary about the life of Jim Hall, a 78-year-old, who was the principal city planner in Baltimore. This man speaks about his decision to paint himself blue and live a lifestyle of absolute freedom. He describes having extra genital parts, living a meditative life and creating more self-awareness through body experiments.
The video is from Friendzone, which is the director duo Jonathan Bregel and Steve Hoover. Bregel is also the Director of Photography and the video’s cinematography showcases the stunning style of the artist. Daniel St. Ours is the DP and builds majestic shots. In the spirit of the Blue Man’s painted exterior, the colorist, Jacob McKee creates a beautiful world through the spectra of color he unites in the film. The score is mesmerizing and an enchanting accompaniment for the viewer. Bregel produced Out of the Blue and brought a New York Times OpDoc-feel to the project. The film moves from the personal experiences and sexuality of the Blue Man throughout his life in Baltimore, as he worked to improve the city’s housing situation for residents. This powerful short is entertaining as we move through its transitions. I found myself engaged in the world built for us under the spell of Bregel.
The Blue Man is a fascinating subject with a charismatic character. I now want to discover more about this fellow and pry into the cinematic world created by Bregel and his team. He talks about drinking Kool-Aid and eating good food with friends as an alternative to an active fast-paced life. Blue Man is a meditative and absorbing study, which PROVOKR wants to explore. Watch Out of the Blue on Vimeo and be elevated to another platform of consciousness with our subjective voice and Jonathan Bregel’s vision.
