Paola Makes a Wish follows the sex talk of two chefs who chatter about orgasms and anal sex at work. The film is told from the point of view of an older woman who overhears the whole conversation.
The actors do a wonderful job, talking about the delights of anal and oral sex with one another as they enter into conversation about sex from the female perspective. The conversation is quotidian and natural, making it easy for the viewer to step into the world of Paola Makes a Wish. The camera is one consistent shot of the women in the kitchen, talking about sex, making it easy for the viewer to follow the plot and understand the metaphorical symbolism.
Images of men flash across the screen, showing the different kinds of men, implying that they know what the women speak of. It is racy and romantic as well as moving to see the men flash on screen and show off for the women who brag about their sex with each other.
Paola, the main character, enjoys a drink and a cigarette with her man at the end of the film, creating a connection between the two. It is implied that the the two have sex after leaving the outdoor seating. Zhannat Alshanova directs the film and it’s featured in Locarno Film Festival as well as Sundance Film Festival.
The women talk about almost fainting from sex that was so good and the older woman who is the center of the frame absorbs all the information as the conduit between the two younger women discussing their sex lives. The film is a riot and needs to be seen if one really wants to know what women think of sex.
