Pussy Riot’s New Protest
The Russian punk band’s latest push for justice

The Russian punk rockers Pussy Riot, who’ve previously used their art to speak out for women’s and LGBT rights, now have their sights aimed at the dismal state of the Russian criminal-justice system. In their video titled “Chaika”—which features shots of prisoners in hoods hanging from nooses—the group satirizes the fat-cat members of the Kremlin (including President Vladimir Putin) and accuses the government of unfairly targeting its critics while coddling its pals. “[The state] doesn’t care about the standard of living of Russian citizens—nor about education, the environment or about the development of science or industry,” declared Pussy Riot member Nadya Tolokonnikova.
