Rio’s Faces of Fashion

Stunning Models Rise Up from Brazil's Favelas

BY: Claire Connors

This colorful short film, Resistance: Rio’s Different Face of Fashion, delves deep into the slums of one of the world’s most beautiful cities and profiles a modeling agency that specializes in finding unique models living in the favela (Portuguese for slum). Started 15 years ago in Jacarezinho, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Jacaré Moda is a model agency, and the face of the Resistance that challenges a fashion world filled with gorgeous yet generic bodies, faces, and skin colors.

We are introduced to three of the agency’s stars: Caio, Camila, and Natália, models who, while obviously fantastic looking, are discriminated against because of their African roots and favela upbringing. The film takes us into Jacarezinho to witness the poverty, yes, but also the beauty of the sun-drenched buildings, the creative style of the young models, and the pride of the residents.

Created by the non-profit collective Papel & Caneta (Paper & Pen), this film is your ticket into another world, and allows us to see just how amazing this Resistance is.
