Sexy Sirens

Northeast Party House Seduces

Majestic beaches, unbelievably beautiful people (i.e. Chris Hemsworth and Margot Robbie), and a seemingly endless stream of good music all highlight some of the best things that Australia has to offer. Australian indie band Northeast Party House is no exception.

Like the rush of a warm breeze against your skin while cruising down the highway, Calypso Beach has an uncanny ability to relax and invigorate at the same time. The Mitch Ansell and Malcolm Besley-directed music video is equally as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears.

A collection of towering overhead landscape shots captured via drone cameras and close-ups of beautiful men and women posing on the beach like sirens calling out to wayward sailors, Tim O’Keefe and Marie Panguad’s cinematography skills are on full display in this music video from 2017. Layered over the warm synths and chill indie pop choruses, Calypso Beach perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a relaxed prisoner to the waves and the inescapable beauty of Australia. With the line, “Calypso beach you’re holding me”, lead singer Zac Hamilton-Reeves’s recognizes that he’s unable to leave this place and the feeling it gives him, but he quite simply couldn’t care less.

In an interview with Triple J, an Australian radio station responsible for many of our favorite music discoveries, Hamilton Reeves reveals that Calypso Beach is actually the name of a lazy river ride he rode – while hungover, no less – during a vacation at Wet N’ Wild Gold Coast in Queensland. It only makes sense that a song so chilled out would come from a place equally as tranquil.
