THE HEART STILL HUMS
Five Women Fight For Their Children

The Heart Still Hums is a short black and white film from Park Pictures and directed by Savanah Leaf and Taylor Russell. It chronicles the lives of children and five young single mothers struggling with their circumstances. Most of the women are in their 20s. The moms include one pregnant at her high school graduation and another who used drugs throughout her pregnancy. The film focuses on women without much support from their own families or help from others. The mothers share how they battle complex issues like drug addiction and homelessness. These challenges also include poverty, depression, and few parenting skills.

Tiffany, a drug-addicted mother, explains her mental and emotional stressors and how they affect her children. Becca describes her pregnancy and the tension it created with her mother. Another, Megan, describes life as a homeless person. These young women are learning “on the go” as they tackle life’s hard lessons and grow up themselves. The women are all from the Sacramento, California area, and two of the region’s non-profit agencies and hard-won resources are highlighted as well.

These moms and their difficulties are representative of so many families across this country. PROVOKR believes this 29 minute documentary film is an essential watch. We hope you take the time to view it.
