Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) are back despite rebooting The Matrix in Revolutions. The trailer — watch it below — puts us back into the iconic simulation. As the world shapes Neo and Trinity, we observe their daily lives since memories were wiped away in the last film. But they still have an unspeakable connection. The visuals take viewers on an insane trip that looks similar but enhanced since the film 18 years ago. The simulation got an upgrade, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Bringing back these characters from the dead was something Lana Wachowski wanted to explore as she processed grief in her real life, “My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn’t really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn’t experienced it that closely.” Wachowski also said, “You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard. My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story. And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super simple. You can look at it and say: ‘OK, these two people die and OK, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn’t that feel good.’ Yeah, it did! It’s simple, and this is what art does and that’s what stories do, they comfort us.”

Wachowski directed this one solo. Her sister, Lilly, decided to sit this one out. Keanu and Moss are joined by an all-new supporting cast featuring Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Christina Ricci. Try to spot them all in the trailer.

Then there is young Morpheus. Of course, there can’t be a movie without the wise, badass character. In this one, Lawrence Fishburne was sidelined, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II assumed the legendary role. He’s coming off his success in Candyman, and we have a hunch he will be just as impressive in Resurrections. Reeves and Abdul-Mateen even somewhat recreate Neo and Morpheus’s first fight training.

This trailer will go down as one of the best of 2021 because of its extraordinary glimpse into The Matrix. We can’t wait to see what the film has in store.
