THE RAT

Watch The David Lynch-like Horror-Thriller

BY: Dante Fresse

The Rat is a nostalgic thriller with the vibe of a David Lynch film. It follows an 18-year-old girl, Renee, who decides to sleep with her boyfriend, Jim, in an abandoned mansion on Halloween Eve. The evening goes haywire when a man with a scary rat mask, sneaks up behind Renee and terrifies her. The masked man turns out to be her boyfriend. This incident creates a rift between them and changes Renee.

This film has a Twin Peaks feel. Renee wears her boyfriend’s varsity jacket and the lover likes to smoke joints inside his beat-up Chevy. The small-town feel gives it a unique charm. The film’s color scheme adopts that of a standard horror-thriller–dark colors mixed with red that creates a specific mood.

Carlen May-Mann directed and the film won the Audience Award at The Method Fest and premiered at Sundance. May-Mann also won Best Director at Brooklyn Horror Film Fest. Isabel Shill is excellent as the frightened Renee and Colin Kelly-Sordelet is on point as Jim.

The producers include Albert Tholen, Beck Kitsis and Chachi Hauser. They put together an all-star production that mimics a classic horror feature. The director of photography is Maria Rusche and she has created suspense during the appropriate moments. The musical score is by Told Slant, who also creates an appropriate tone. Moreover, the editing from Chris McNabb works in tandem to contribute to the up-tempo pace.

This movie is haunting and exchanges the audience’s goodwill for shock and horror. It is riveting and challenges our notion of how confronting one’s fears can make us resilient, but more vulnerable at the same time. PROVOKR loves this thriller and believes you will, too. We can’t wait for you to see it!
