The story begins with three teens in LA County who signed up for a screenwriting class with Gabriel Cowan. Jarad, 16, faces up to 200 years in prison for four attempted murders; Juan, 16, could serve 90-to-life for first-degree murder; and Antonio, 14, awaits 90-to-life sentencing for two attempted murders. As one gets out and returns to his life, the others wait anxiously, hoping their mistakes as a teen won’t damn them for life.
The documentary feature debut from Ben Lear takes us inside the legislative battle to protect juveniles from these sentences. It creates an overwhelming sense of hope that things could change. But overall, the documentary is chilling and uncovers more issues affecting the prison system. The compelling narrative and characters in They Call Us Monsters will stay with you long after you watch it.
