TOFINO’S PRIMITIVE SURF LIFE
Where Nature + Championship Surfing Is Tradition

PRIMITIVE is a short four-minute film centering on a grandmother, Gisele Bruhwiler, who raised an entire family of pro coldwater surfers in Tofino, originally a small fishing village in Canada. Along with teaching children how to surf, Gisele teaches them how to live off the land to survive. Kalum, her Olympic hopeful grandson, carries this tradition on as his grandmother instructs the family.
Benoit Lalande directs and edits this project. The film is distributed by GURU Energy and produced by Camille Hébert & Liam Mac. This film is about tradition and how it’s passed on to generations. Kalum learned his skills from his grandmother, who taught her children and passed on how to live. The Bruhwiler family prides themselves on taking from nature–both the land and sea. Gisele claims that “the elements of nature don’t cost a dime,” and they are much more peaceful than the complicated city life.
Kalum is a skilled surfer. He finds food and drinks from the forest he lives in and survives off the land. Kalum learns from his environment, and this film showcases his all-around abilities.
