Last week, The Umbrella Academy actor Elliot Page came out as transgender and non-binary in a powerful letter that starts with him expressing his pronouns are he/they. Page was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Juno. Following his bravery in coming out, databases and Netflix changed his credits to reflect his identity, showing acceptance in a powerful and touching way.

Page’s letter didn’t stop there. Instead, he drew attention to the epidemic against trans people, particularly trans women of color, who have been murdered at alarming rates for years. In 2020 alone, more than 40 transgender people have been murdered beause of their gender identity. By coming out and speaking up, Page has brought even more attention to the issues transgender and transgender non-binary individuals face on a day-to-day basis.

Elliot’s wife, Canadian dancer and choreographer Emma Portner, wrote her own message in supporting Page: “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.”

Elliot Page, we are thankful for your bravery and for calling on the nation to recognize and love one another for who they are. It’s great to see you free at last and comfortable sharing your experience on such a global platform. Read Page’s letter below.
