Back in 2004, when Kanye West was still trying to make his mark on the world of rap, he appeared at the Def Poetry Jam, a spoken word poetry showcase created by music producer Russell Simmons, hosted by hip hopper Mos Def and broadcast on HBO. In this video, West gives a winning performance of a poem titled, “Self Conscious.”
