Lana Del Rey is a gift. She is a brilliant poet who can capture a nation’s feelings so accurately with a pen, a guitar and her voice. Lana Del Rey wrote a new song, “Looking for America,”as her reaction poetically and musically to the latest round of mass shootings. Last week after completing the song she tweeted, “Thinking of everyone this morning – we finished our song and wanted you to know that all proceeds are going to the Gilroy Garlic Festival Victims Relief Fund.” She also posted a haunting and sparse performance of the song on her instagram page. Lana Del Rey’s new album Norman Fucking Rockwell comes out August 30th.

There is no music video for Looking for America, just the lyric one we provided here. But with just the words to hear the song becomes even a stronger poetic reflection right from her heart. It is a haunting song of missing an America that is no longer there. One line, “Pulled over to watch the children in the park used to worry about them only after dark,” really captures the sadness, loss and fear we live with everyday. Lana Del Rey is an original, the authentic poet of our times as she has proved in so many brilliant songs.
