The Romantic Jeff Buckley
The singer reads a love poem—live—to us all
In the early 90s there was a sweet little coffee shop in the East Village called Sin-é where local musicians would stop by and play a song or two in exchange for a cappuccino or Rolling Rock. One of those thirsty artists was the young Jeff Buckley, a soft-toned troubadour often heard playing his love songs over the noise of cups shattering in the kitchen. Buckley became a mainstay at the tiny venue and if you were lucky (or smart) enough to have caught him when he was busking for tips, before his untimely death in 1997, you had bragging rights forever.
Those who didn’t, can watch a tender moment here, where Buckley reads a poem called New Year’s Eve Prayer to his lover and the attentive Sin-é crowd. It’s a rough video—there are indeed cups and saucers rattling in the background—but Buckley‘s shrewd sentiment comes through loud and clear.
