In the 1980s, the diminutive, German-accented  Dr. Ruth Westheimer became the go-to source on all matters of the sexual kind. Her radio show Sexually Speaking and later, the Dr. Ruth Show catapulted her to fame as she became the most unlikely sex guru since Alfred Kinsey literally wrote the book on sexual behavior.  The now-retired 92-year-old and her decades of work as a behavioral and sex therapist created an environment for other experts to openly discuss issues that were once considered taboo, especially in the mass media.

Today, with a multitude of platforms to choose from, there is no shortage of talk, analysis, and information about relationships and sex. The time seemed right for PROVOKR, with its distinctive take on current culture, to partner with the creators of The Trouble with Sex podcast hosted by Dr. Tammy Nelson. PROVOKR will link readers to the podcast, which explores all facets of modern love, sex, and relationships. The podcast created by Dr. Tammy and producers Brandi Savitt and Jane Applegate launched in 2019 because, “there’s no easy place to really dive deep into very common issues that we all face… in our relationships or in our lives as sexual beings, said Ms. Savitt.  “We wanted to make it accessible for an audience to get this information in a shame-free, judgment-free way.”

As a sexologist, certified sex therapist, and relationship therapist, Dr. Tammy brings 35 years of expertise to her audience, but she also relies on other experts in the field,  “I wanted to get people real information about sex, so that it’s not just pure sex-ed, but intriguing, entertaining, fun, and where people get to talk to and hear from people who really know what they’re talking about,” said Dr. Tammy.

Since its launch, The Trouble with Sex has produced 41 fascinating and provocative podcasts dealing with a variety of topics including, female sexuality, cheating, monogamy, sex and dating after #metoo, illness and sex, masculinity even a discussion about God and sex.  While there is more dialogue, knowledge and science to address these issues, Dr. Tammy says one thing has not changed, “ “Everybody has the same question. People still want to know if they’re normal, they still compare themselves to other people. Just because there’s more on TV, it just makes people a little more nervous to ask like, ‘How come everybody else is doing it and I’m not?” According to the doctor, “normal is a setting on the washing machine, it means nothing”.

Since Dr. Ruth increased our sexual awareness more than 40-years-ago, have we become better at discussing our sexual desires? Can we be honest about our needs and relationship issues? The answer may be found in the title of the podcast. “I ask everyone in every episode, what do you think is the biggest trouble with sex today?” said Dr. Tammy.  “I think the overarching answer (if I could put them all into one category), is basically that we talk the least about sex to the person we’re actually having sex with. That seems to be the biggest trouble with sex today.”
