George Rouy stands at the forefront of a new wave of painters who analyze every detail and sweep each curve violently into view, celebrating identity and how we navigate it in the modern world.
How do you say who you are?
Rouy’s paintings are figurative enough for audiences to recognize the “what,” but the “who” presents another question entirely. The colors he brings to each canvas feel bruised, yet full of vitality at the same time. Sulking grays shot through with lemony brights, tangles of limbs that sometimes reach for us, sometimes slip away from us into each other. We can’t always tell where we stand in relation to his work, but that ambiguity makes it all the more alluring.
