‘Late Night’
Emma Thompson And Mindy Kaling
The upcoming comedy Late Night starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling looks like it’s going to be a meditation on the entertainment industry for the millennial generation. As it’s all incredibly topical—filled with lots of inclusivity and “real looking” women who are actually funny. The plot looks like it’s been written a little on the nose. It looks like the only sex interest in the entire film is the married couple played by Thompson and John Lithgow as the emasculated husband. At the crux of the story is an aging late-night television host (played by Thompson) whose career is suffering so she must hire her first female writer in order to spice things up. In steps young, quirky Kaling. We all miss her since The Mindy Project ended so this should be a real treat.
The film will surely be encouraging for older women, up-and-coming female comics trying to break through and, hopefully, will prove to be an entertaining night at the movies but it doesn’t look particularly provocative. I am a big fan of John Lithgow and am always mildly amused at whatever he does while I also like Thompson (who doesn’t?) and Kaling. Late Night should prove to be a light-hearted comedy with a bit of cultural resonance that moviegoers will enjoy. Any feature where women take control, are sexy, confident and full of pizazz is one I definitely want to watch. Also, we get a glimpse of Amy Ryan in the trailer and I haven’t seen enough of her since 2007’s Gone Baby Gone.
