For our first PROVOKR pick of the new year, we choose The Grudge.  What better way to start off 2020 than with a good scare? You don’t have to answer that. This new version of The Grudge series is not a reboot, sequel or prequel. Instead, it takes place between the events of The Grudge (2004) and The Grudge 2 (2006).

In The Grudge, when a young mother murders her family, Detective Muldoon (Andrea Riseborough) takes the case. What starts as a standard investigation into a gruesome crime takes an even more sinister turn. That’s when Muldoon discovers the home is cursed by a vengeful spirit who dooms all who enter the house. Now, with her own life and her young son’s at risk, Muldoon must race to escape the curse.

The trailer relies on atmospheric horror as well as jump scares. It’s unsettling, especially in a shower shot. You may consider watching this one in the daytime or with a friend. But, you should be fine as long as you never enter a haunted home.

The Grudge was written and directed by Nicolas Pesce who made his name with the indie horror film The Eyes of My Mother. In addition to Riseborough, this new take on The Grudge projects has a cast that includes John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Demián Bichir and Jacki Weaver.

See The Grudge, if you dare, in theaters starting January 3, 2020.
