Have you ever been watching a movie, and yes, we mean a real movie not a blue movie, and come upon a scene so erotic, so sexy, you wonder how it got past the censors? Ok, maybe you’re too busy enjoying this scene to find the time to ponder how the movie escaped censorship. And obviously, we are talking about sex scenes. Every once in a while a movie comes along with a sex scene that gains its own notoriety for a number of reasons. Very often, the scene itself is part of a larger, erotic movie, but not always. One such famously erotic scene is the love scene between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland in 1973’s Don’t Look Now.

The classic film is by no means an erotic drama. No, Nicolas Roeg’s film is a thriller about a couple grieving the death of their young daughter, who escape to Venice for a change of scenery. The movie explores themes of grief and the effect a child’s death can have on a couple. While the movie is famous in its own right as a classic horror film, it is has much more fame for a steamy sex scene that comes partway through the film.

It is not a grotesque or violent scene, but an incredibly graphic depiction of two people making love. The scene itself is so realistic, that people have been debating for decades whether Sutherland and Christie were actually having sex on camera. Both Christie and Sutherland were totally nude affirmed both stars. Sutherland said no, that it was simulated while Director Nic Roeg, Julie Christie and the Producer of the film Peter Bart all said yes, it actually happened. In the background you have Christies’ then boyfriend Warren Beatty so incensed that they were going to shoot the sex scene nude that he flew over from LA to London immediately to stop it but he was too late. Once in London, Warren Beatty saw the scene and pressured Nic Roeg to cut out some snippets here and there. We don’t know if they actually stayed in or not. The censors got rid of most of the pubic hair. Love to see the director’s original version, what an NFT that would make. Poor Warren then went on a ferocious campaign to stop the film from being distributed. One of the aspects of the scene that made it so controversial is how it focused on both characters’ pleasure, including a depiction of Sutherland performing oral sex on Christie. And while it’s been decades since Don’t Look Now came out in theaters, the film holds up incredibly well and the sex scene is the hottest, most riveting sex scene ever filmed.
