Imagine a world in which single people are given 45 days to find true love, and if they don’t they are transformed into the animal of their choice and released into the woods. That’s the world of The Lobster, a surreal new romantic comedy that is now available for rent on video. Colin Farrell stars as David, a man who has been dumped by his wife and sent to a strange place known as “The Hotel” to find a new partner. There he encounters an enigmatic stranger (Rachel Weisz) who elicits desires he has never experienced before. The movie was shot in Ireland and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the Greek provocateur whose 2009 film, Dogtooth, about a father who takes home-schooling and isolating his family to incestuous extremes, shocked and titillated art-house audiences.
