The Academy Awards are right around the corner, and Oscar campaigns are in full swing. We’ve already talked a bit about what movies are likely to get Academy Award nominations, but let’s take a look at five actors likely to get a Best Actor or Best Actress nomination.

Kristen Stewart

Stewart may not give a damn whether she gets the nod or not, but her performance as Diana Spencer in Spencer has garnered rave reviews. As a result, she looks poised to receive her very first nomination.

Frances McDormand

Considering that McDormand has won Best Actress three times, she is a shoo-in to be nominated again. The Academy loves McDormand and will likely recognize her for The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Nicole Kidman

The Academy loves a biopic, and Kidman transformed herself into Hollywood royalty Lucille Ball for this Aaron Sorkin-penned flick. Audiences haven’t seen Being the Ricardos yet. However, Kidman’s name is out there for the award.

Lady Gaga

Critics may not love Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci, but Gaga’s performance is called a high point. Between this and her performance in 2018’s A Star is Born, she’s proving that she’s a competent actress.

Tessa Thompson

This nod might be a little more of a long-shot than the other potential nominees on this list, but Thompson has received stellar reviews for her performance in Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut, Passing.

Will Smith

As we already mentioned, the Academy loves a good biopic. Smith goes all out as tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams’ father, Richard, in King Richard.

Benedict Cumberbatch

Cumberbatch gives a magnetic and nuanced performance in this Western from Jane Campion. And given that The Power of the Dog is Campion’s first film in over a decade, the Academy will be looking at it closely.

Denzel Washington

Like McDormand, who plays his on-screen wife, Washington is a good bet for Best Actor for his performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth as Macbeth. And yes, this is an adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play.

Javier Bardem

Another performance audiences have not seen yet, like Kidman, Bardem has a good shot at getting the nomination for Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos. Bardem is already an Academy favorite with two nominations and one win to his name.

Andrew Garfield

Finally, Garfield is potentially poised for his second Best Actor nomination for his performance in the Netflix musical Tick, Tick… Boom! His last nomination was for Hacksaw Ridge.
