YOU NEED 2 KNOW ROZZI
The PROVOKR Exclusive Interview
When asked about the inspirations behind her latest album, Rozzi was quick to answer.
“Strength, vulnerability, being brave in expressing your deeper feelings,” she said. “And of course, there’s some heartbreak and love. It kind of captures me becoming an adult.”
That maturity is apparent in Hymn For Tomorrow, the artist’s sophomore album. From songs like “Mad Man” To Lie Like That,” and “Hymn For Tomorrow,” to shimmering R&B-tinged track “I Can’t Go To The Party,” Rozzi glides from serious to playful with grace.
“I feel like through writing the record, I started in one place and ended up somewhere else. I feel like I just woke up,” she shared.
Fans enjoyed the new songs at live shows, a rarity in the days of social distancing. The latest tour took her across the country, playing for audiences in Seattle, Los Angeles, DC, and New York, to name a few.
“I knew how much I missed [touring] during COVID, but I also had no idea how much I missed it,” she shared when asked about the tour. “It reminded me that this was what I was meant to do. I don’t feel like myself unless I’m [performing] regularly.”
Rozzi’s songwriting process matches the personal feel of her lyrics. She writes a poem first – “I write all the lyrics before I even walk in the studio” – and then brings it to one of the many talented co-writers she works with. From there, it’s your typical creative magic.
“Someone picks up an instrument, or sings a melody, and that inspires something else. It’s hard to describe,” she laughed. “We just start singing stuff and hearing stuff until it starts to make the shape of a song.”
Music isn’t the only arena she’s conquering these days. The artist appeared in the first season of the Apple+ drama The Morning Show, singing a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
“I sang at my ex-boyfriend’s sister’s wedding and the creator of [the show] was there,” Rozzi shared. “And she liked my performance. I was very honored to [perform.] It also opened me up to so many new fans, which was great.”
New music, tours, TV show appearances; is Rozzi planning on taking a break any time soon? Not likely.
“Lots of new music coming, always,” she promised. The artist is planning to release another album, “the second half” of Hymn For Tomorrow (if all goes according to plan, the first track will be out in January). “And I’ve already started writing whatever’s gonna come next.”
We can’t wait to hear it!
