Now that Olivia Bee has turned 22, she has officially dedicated half of her life to the art of photography. After being assigned to a school photography class in the sixth grade, the Portland, Oregon native started documenting her world—capturing herself and her friends going through the highs and lows of adolescence. Bee posted her work on Flickr, which caught the eye of corporate advertising agents who hired her to shoot for brands like Converse and Nike. Then came magazine assignments—including shoots for the New York Times Magazine—and gallery exhibits of her work. In 2014, Bee, who currently lives in Brooklyn, had her first solo show in New York titled Kids in Love. “Kids in Love is about all of my friends in high school and what we did, the boys I kissed, the universe we created for ourselves,” said Bee of the exhibit. Now Bee’s photographs are available in a just released book of the same name. Here are some of PROVOKR’s favorite examples of Bee’s work.
