A child of two parents who worked in the photography and print media manufacturing industries in upstate New York, Deana Lawson’s voyage to becoming the beloved, decorated and widely respected photographer she is today was marked by travels to Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, and Jamaica. There’s a hunger to her work, a thirst to know people as they really are, to show the truths of their intimate lives behind closed doors. She draws out main character energy and lights it without a single granule of sugarcoating or exaggeration.

The thing is, each of us is the main character in our own life. Why would we deny anyone that role? Lawson celebrates this throughout her work, and there’s a stark honesty to it that we simply don’t find often in photography these days.

In a time where everyone is marketing something, and all photography is content, Deana Lawson doesn’t give a shit about product placement or celebrity subjects (although she’s held the queen, Rihanna, in her viewfinder more than once).

There is beauty in her defiance.

Nearly all of Lawson’s subjects stare deeply into the lens. They lounge on the roofs of cars, cut through an opaque night on horseback, or sit in a room with walls not yet completely painted. They smile or they don’t, and it’s always the precise truth. Lawson frames each shot in a way that makes you, as a viewer, feel like you’ve just walked nonchalantly into her subjects’ homes a few minutes later than you said you’d show up.

“What the hell are you doing here?” some seem to demand.

“Oh, there you are,” others demand. “It’s about time you showed up. Come take a look at this.”

Far be it for us to deny her, to deny any of them. The most human thing we can do is give each other our time and consideration. Attention is currency – that’s why they say we “pay” attention. In the case of Deana Lawson, it’s an investment we’re glad to make.

Find Lawson’s work on display from September 10 through October 24, 2026 at Gagosian, on West 24th Street in New York. Tell them we sent you.
