1883 – YELLOWSTONE’S PREQUEL
Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott+

In its fourth season, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. Dutton, a sixth-generation rancher, and devoted father is immersed in a corrupt world where politicians are bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber corporations, and land grabs make developers billions.
To understand the history of the Dutton’s, Paramount+ is set to premiere 1883. The prequel series follows the Dutton family as they travel west through the Great Plains. Real-life couple Faith Hill and Tim McGraw take on the roles of Margaret and James Dutton. Sam Elliott plays cowboy Shea Brennan.
The recently released trailer plays like a teaser for a big-screen blockbuster movie. From Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone, the trailer highlights the vast landscape and shows James Dutton and his family preparing for a move.
“My family’s meeting me here tonight and we’re heading north, and we’ll keep heading north till I find a country that’s worth the journey,” he says. Shea, however, warns, “this journey will be dangerous all the way to Oregon.” And the short trailer makes no bones about it, “the road west was paved with blood.”
In addition to McGraw, Hill, and Elliott, 1883 also features Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton, Young Sheldon actress Isabel May, and Sons of Anarchy star Lamonica Garrett. In addition, it was revealed this week that Graham Greene would join the cast. Greene takes on the role of Spotted Eagle, a Crow elder who spots the wagon train and tells James Dutton about the place, Paradise Valley, where he should settle with his family. Greene earned an Academy Award nomination for his role as Kicking Bird in the film Dances with Wolves. He is also known for his work in Green Mile, Maverick, and Wind River films.
1883 will premiere on Paramount+ on December 19.
