MANSON – THEY’RE BACK!
Helter Skelter Series Unearths Startling Truths
The Mansons are back, but have they ever really left? Another Charles Manson-inspired project is coming July 26 — and this time, it’s an in-depth docuseries on Epix.
Helter Skelter: American Myth claims to be the most extensive study of the Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders. The 6-part documentary puts cult members in the interviewee’s seat. Their admissions and insight will shock you.
“He was a puppet master pulling everyone’s strings,” one person says in voiceover.
“I was definitely under Charlie’s spell,” says another.
2019 marked 50 years since the murders that uncovered the cult led by Charles Manson. There has been a surge of fictionalized films depicting the slaughter and the Manson family cult. There was Mary Harron’s Charlie Says, the Hilary Duff-led B-movie The Haunting of Sharon Tate and Quentin Tarantino’s reimagining in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
The fascination with Charles Manson has permeated pop culture for decades. There have been two other versions of Helter Skelter based on the book by the same name. Charles Manson was also one subject of Netflix’s Mindhunter.
This Helter Skelter adaptation — directed by An Inconvenient Truth producer Lesley Chilcott — experienced a setback before its premiere date. It was supposed to air June 14, but with the calls for social justice, Epix postponed it. Helter Skelter can refer to the racial tensions between Blacks and Whites.
But this documentary is worth the wait. We can’t wait to consume another Manson-centric series.
