ELLE FANNING IS ROYALTY
She's Russia's Empress Catherine in The Great
Behind every great ignorant ruler is a capable queen pulling strings. Elle Fanning stars as the said queen in the Hulu series The Great with the incompetent king played by Nicholas Hoult.
The Great is Elle Fanning’s first recurring TV role. Having grown up in the spotlight along with sister Dakota Fanning, Elle has starred with some of the biggest actors, including Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and more. She landed major roles in films like Super 8, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, Maleficent and 2018’s Teen Spirit.
Like The Beguiled, the upcoming limited series The Great is a period drama. Set in Russia, Elle stars as Catherine The Great, the longest-ruling female leader of Russia. The series documents the rebellion she led against her husband, Peter III (Nicholas Hoult’s character).
When watching the trailer — it’s above for your viewing pleasure — you might notice it has a similar feel and banter to another period drama about women taking power: the 2018 film The Favourite. The screenwriter for the Yorgos Lanthimos film, Tony McNamara, penned The Great, as well. From earthy hues to the decadent palace to the sophisticated banter, The Great oozes that quirky, powerful vibe for which The Favourite is known.
In this project, Elle Fanning provides fans with her most sophisticated performance to date. With the Emmy deadline still months away, keep an eye on chatter about Fanning. She may grab a nomination for this captivating performance.
