Everything old is new again — at least, in Hollywood. From legendary IP (intellectual properties) like movies and other TV shows, to popular video games, here are some of our favorite shows that began as other media.
CALL MY AGENT!
Possibly the most underrated TV show on Netflix, Call My Agent!, follows a group of people at a talent agency. The French series scored a remake in the UK for BBC and Sundance Now. Starring David Oyelowo, Dominic West, Phoebe Dynevor, and Jessica Oyelowo (yes, David’s wife), you will binge the comedy in no time.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER
Finally, one of the greatest movie franchises of all time becomes a TV series, too. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years before The Hobbit and LOTR with new and old faces. It boasts an even larger budget than HBO’s Game of Thrones, which is quite the accomplishment.
HOUSE OF THE DRAGON
Speaking of Game of Thrones, this list wouldn’t be complete without House of the Dragon, the massively popular prequel series. The show follows House Targaryen 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones. All hail the Mad King!
THE LAST OF US
The popular video game series The Last of Us made it to the small screen with an HBO Max series. Starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, this show brought the video game to life for a whole new generation of fans.
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER
The last live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender did not go over well. Luckily, it returned to episodic form with Netflix’s 2022 live-action remake. Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai is a major standout.
PEACEMAKER
The Suicide Squad was a hit in 2021, which has prompted HBO to create a series around John Cena’s Peacemaker character. The show scored two seasons, and creator James Gunn has teased more appearances for Peacemaker in DC Universe movies.
OBI-WAN KENOBI
Ewan McGregor reprised one of his most iconic characters on Disney+: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader also returned, with new stars Kumail Nanjiani, Benny Safdie, Joel Edgerton, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. joining the cast.
WILLOW
Based on the 1988 George Lucas film of the same name, it follows a “dwarf farmer” who does magic. Harry Potter’s Warwick Davis leads the cast.
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
Three seasons in, and AMC’s adaptation of the Anne Rice classic is bigger than ever. Starring Jacob Anderson as Louis and Sam Reid as Lestat, the show has led to more Rice spin-offs — Mayfair Witches and Talamasca: The Secret Order — from the network.
THE SHINING GIRLS
Based on the novel of the same name from South African author Lauren Beukes, The Shining Girls follows a time-traveling drifter who must kill the shining girls. Yes, we’re talking about the creepy twins in The Shining. Elisabeth Moss stars.
GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
And, finally, the one you’ve all been waiting for. A new adaptation of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has been in the works for a while now, finally landing at Sky. Pre-sale efforts for US distribution are currently underway.
