Many people got hooked on Ozark over the course of the pandemic, waiting anxiously to see what would come next for the money-laundering Byrde family. Fans all over the world rejoiced when the long-awaited fourth season was finally announced.
The first part of Season 4 will premiere January 21, with the second part coming at an unannounced later date. Season 3 left viewers on a cliffhanger: Marty and Wendy Byrde, played by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, have fully immersed themselves in the Navarro cartel. Their daughter, Charlotte, has split from her parents, leaving another mess to clean up.
The trailer has revealed a few things about what we can expect in Season 4. Marty and Wendy seem to think they can get out of their partnership with the cartel, while Ruth is working against them. With the Byrde’s children getting involved in crime, things are definitely going to get a lot messier this season.
Bateman stars in the show, but his involvement doesn’t stop there. He also executive produces the show and directs many episodes. However, he made the difficult decision not to direct any episodes in the upcoming season. He did get to help plan the big-picture stuff for Season 4, but Bateman left the the plot details up to head writer Chris Mundy.
“I do know where everything is going to end,” Bateman said about his conversations with Mundy. “The specifics leading up to it, I didn’t really grind him on. But I was interested in the big question he has the opportunity to answer: Are they going to get away with it, or are they going to pay a bill? What does he want to message to the audience about the consequences of what the Byrdes have done — or lack thereof?
“We had some great conversations about that, and he’s got really good ideas about that,” Bateman continued. “Specifically, what kind of happens at the end of the last episode: I know, and it’s great.”
