PUSHING BOUNDARIES ON TV
The Breakthrough Moments
TV is a place for people to push outside of the confines of society — or to show society as it is. Shows, for example, have always been far ahead of their film counterparts. It demonstrates characters from all walks of life. The sex, the gore, the romance: TV has shown it all.
VIOLENCE
“Battle of the Bastards” Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones assembled some of the most extensive sets in TV history. That included the Battle of Bastards. It cost HBO a whopping $11 million to execute and set the scene for modern battle sequences.
Gangs of London “Shootout”
This Gangs of London shootout is bound to be remembered long after the series ends. It’s fresh in people’s minds now, but years from now, people will be looking back on it to grasp how it was filmed entirely.
Vikings Violent Ritual
And if you’re looking for shocking, Vikings is among the goriest. This blood ritual is intense, even for a show that pushes boundaries.
ROMANCE
“Plato’s Stepchildren” Star Trek
The first interracial kiss on TV happened between Kirk (William Shatner) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) on Star Trek. There is a lot of lore around that lip lock — Shatner claims their lips didn’t touch IRL — but the two characters were tied romantically in a way that lives on forever.
Grey’s Anatomy – Callie and Arizona
Shonda Rhimes broke boundaries with Grey’s Anatomy. For once, a series showed the different types of love, including the one between Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins. The bisexual/lesbian relationship was full of dynamism and heartbreak. Unfortunately, it didn’t treat it as unusual, but their relationship was like everyone else.
SEX
Euphoria Season 1, Episode 1
Euphoria has transformed the way we see high schoolers on TV. And the first episode alone broke records by showing more than 30 penises on screen. Now that’s one way to start a series. Unfortunately, most of those videos aren’t available on the internet, but the season 2 trailer is here. And not to mention a trans person in the main relationship — it’s groundbreaking.
Sex/Life “Shower Scene”
It’s the scene everyone talked about. Even if you didn’t watch the Netflix series, you know what we’re talking about. One of the main characters showed their gigantic penis. Prosthetic or not, it was impressive.
Orange Is The New Black “Bed Bug Scene”
Orange Is The New Black broke so many boundaries. It was one of Netflix’s first original series and it focused on lesbians in prison. How much more groundbreaking can it get? It also featured Laverne Cox as a transgender inmate and was likely the first non-stereotypical portrayal of a trans woman. To celebrate the series, we’ve given you what you all want: The bed bugs sex scene.
Elite “Threesome”
Along with Euphoria, Elite demonstrates what high schoolers do. The Spanish series laid it all out, especially in this threesome.
Sense8 “Orgy”
And finally, it’s the orgy we’re still talking about years later. The Wachowskis know how to do it. The orgy doesn’t discriminate — everyone is hooking up with everyone. The mosh pit of naked bodies defines a new era of relationships and sex scenes, especially in the age of streaming.
