Don’t Look Away From Amy Adams’ Thriller
Intense without being overwhelming and with an ending that demands a rewatch…prepare for the psychological roller coaster ride that is Sharp Objects.
Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel and brought to the screen by Flynn, Marti Noxon and Jean-Marc Vallée (RIP), Sharp Objects was actually one of horror-titan Blumhouse’s first forays into series (in partnership with eOne) and it’s a hell of a powerhouse thriller led my Amy Adams.
Please be aware—the show features significant discussions and storylines about suicide, self-harm, abuse and graphic images of death. The series was actually toned down from the book but still want to issue a warning. Maybe watch with a buddy or group—the show covers important (though difficult) topics.
The ensemble around Adams is just phenomenal. There is a pre-Euphoria Sydney Sweeney with a great arc and a pre-IT Sophia Lillis, who plays a younger version of Adams’ Camille in a stunning performance. Also Eliza Scanlen before Little Women showing extraordinary range and depth. And give credit too to Chris Messina and Matt Craven, who both play cops that feel like much more real people than most TV cops.
So make plans with a friend to go watch the eight episodes of Sharp Objects on HBO Max. And then watch it again because you will want to see everything you missed. The show may feel infuriating yet still amazingly satisfying.
