SUCCESSION’S MEDIA MOGULS
Emmy-Nominated Show Succession Returns To HBO

When looking at the nominees for Best Drama Series for the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, there are several shows that are not shocking and so well known: Killing Eve, Pose, Better Call Saul, Game Of Thrones and This Is Us. Even Bodyguard and Ozark have risen to a certain level of recognition. But HBO’s Succession is one some people may have never heard about.
The show did not get much attention at the Golden Globes, which helps secure odds for Emmys the next year. The only nomination Succession picked up was Actor in a Supporting Role for Kieran Culkin. (Yes, that’s Home Alone‘s Macaulay Culkin’s younger brother.) Yet, the critically acclaimed dramedy picked up five nominations after its first season. That’s impressive.
Succession follows the family of a media mogul, headed by the aging and maybe deteriorating Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Logan’s character is definitely reminiscent of a Rupert Murdoch-type figure as he exclaims they’re going to be the biggest media conglomerate in the world. Yeah, right, buddy.
His children are equally as greedy. They all want a stake in the family claim, and they are willing to stab each other in the back to ascend the media throne. The Roy family is rounded out by Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Culkin) and Connor (Alan Ruck).
In the second season, which debuts August 11, the family is seemingly working together, but for how long? As family and workplace drama combine to form an epic show, Succession will have you thinking about media and the people who run it in a completely different way.
