TEENAGE BOUNTY HUNTERS
Phillips + Fellini Fight Crime in Crop Tops
Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan has done it again with the Netflix series, Teenage Bounty Hunters. The ten-episode series debut was August 14th, and in only two weeks, it has jumped to the Netflix Top 10 list and earned a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Entertainment Weekly’s Kristy Baldwin said, “Brisk and funny, warm and wonderfully oddball, Teenage Bounty Hunters is a binge everyone – except maybe Old Testament God – can get behind.”
With hormones bubbling to the surface in Georgia’s Bible-belt, this satirical series checks more boxes than you knew you had! Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini play twin sisters, Sterling and Blair Wesley. The pair stumble into bounty hunting’s unusual career, after a romp in the school parking lot with their boyfriends. With the help of veteran bounty hunter, Bowser, played by Kadeem Hardison, the sisters quickly learn the ropes.
With sassy quips and one-liners, these gun-toting sisters serve up a level of teen drama and “badassery” that we haven’t seen since Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Only this time, mean girl Cordelia is replaced by April Stevens, whose driving force is earning the position of faith Fellowship Leader. The show explores a unique mashup of the high society in the evangelical south and the lust and desire that comes hand in hand with growing up. Oh, and there’s a continuous supply of outlaws, rifles and frozen yogurt.
For most of the season, viewers watch the sisters fight crime in designer jeans and crop tops while they unpack ‘boning’ and falling in love, but as the episodes progress, so does the overarching plot. A picture of what appears to be the girl’s mother, Debbie, pinned on Bowser’s ‘skip’ board is seen as early as in episode two. We won’t reveal too much, but the wild plot twist is an entertainment must-see.
Despite the original title, “Slutty Teenage Bounty Hunters,” Teenage Bounty Hunters is a charming, exciting, and witty new show that will get you excited about cuddling up on the couch in your comfy pants and a glass of wine.
Want to know the best part? In an interview with Collider, Maddie Phillips hints at a possible season two! Saying, “So, whatever comes in the next season, it is sad that they’re not what they thought they were, but it isn’t that bad because they still have a magical bond. I’m just really excited to see where that goes… Who knows? I’m very excited and hopeful.” Let’s keep our fingers crossed, and maybe we will see more of Phillips and Fellini in 2021.
