Moses Sumney just released the video for album track “Bystanders (in space),” the latest installment from Live From Blackalachia. The album was recorded live in 2020, with 14 tracks from previous records Grae and Aromanticism, released in 2020 and 2017 respectively.

The film that will accompany this record, titled Blackalachia, was directed by Sumney. The artist shared a taste of the movie with the video forBystanders (in space).”

The video is simple, with Sumney standing in front of a black background. The camera circles him as he sings, the light catching the sequins on his outfit. It’s beautiful in its sparseness, showing that sometimes you can do more with less.

In a press statement about the album and film, Sumney said, “In early 2020, my band and I gathered in my home in Western North Carolina, living and breathing together, re-arranging songs from my first 2 albums into a live odyssey. As the year unfurled and the international tour was wiped off the cosmic schedule, I realized there should be some kind of record, a copper snapshot of those musical arrangements and the turmoil and beauty of that year. So we took to the Appalachian mountains and filmed and recorded Live from Blackalachia.”

He continued: “Over the course of two days, we filmed 14 songs, totally live, the trees as our audience, the grasshoppers our background singers. Live From Blackalachia is a wild imagining of what can happen when we seek not just to reclaim nature, but to reintegrate with it.”

Live From Blackalachia is set to drop December 10.
