Next Cocaine Godmother
Catherine Zeta Jones to Sofia Vergara
A six-episode limited series autobiographical crime drama based on the life and death of Colombian drug queen Griselda Blanco is currently in production at Netflix, in a joint project from the streaming giant, the Narcos: Mexico team and Latin World Entertainment.
Joining the project is four time Emmy Awards and Golden Globes winner Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”, “American’s Got Talent”, “Hot Pursuit”), who will play the titular lead role, as well as serve as the show’s executive producer, along with Eric Newman (“Narcos: Mexico”, “Children of Men”), Luis Balaguer (“Hot Pursuit”, “Killer Women”), Doug Miro (“Narcos: Mexico, “Prince of Persia”), Andrés Baiz (“The Hidden Face”, “Roa”) and Carlo Bernard (“Narcos: Mexico”, “The Great Wall”) and Ingrid Escajeda (“Justified”, “Sneaky Pete”).
Escajeda is also the series’ writer and show-runner.
Directed by Andre Baiz, Griselda will tell the story of the rise to power of one of Colombia’s most notorious crime lords, who was dubbed “Cocaine Grandmother” and “Black Widow”.
Born and raised in the slums of Cartagena, Colombia during one of the most turbulent eras of Colombian history (Aptly called La Violencia), Griselda would become a rare breed of woman who committed unspeakable acts of violence as a young girl, which then fueled her ruthless sociopathy as an adult.
Her story has since been cemented in urban myth and pop culture, most popularly giving inspiration to tv shows like Narcos, Cocaine Cowboys, Queen of the South (Starring Alice Braga), as well as the 2017 film Cocaine Grandmother, starring Catharine Zeta-Jones.
As of yet no release date has been given for the upcoming new series. A premiere may be slated for 2022 or 2023.
