SOFIA COPPOLA’S BEST
A Short Film Sampler of Fiction, Music & Fashion

Sophia Coppola is a legend in the film industry, directing or writing films like Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), and The Godfather III (1990). In addition, Coppola has made a series of short films, which have won her critical acclaim. Here is a list of her best short films, ranked from best to “best.”
1. Lick the Star (1998)
This film follows a gang of schoolgirls who bully and discuss makeup while dwelling on the literature of V.C. Andrews, where they pull the phrase “lick the star” as a code word for poisoning the boys’ lunches. Slowly, the group turns on each other and gossip until each relationship crumbles, showing the devilishness of junior high. This is a must-watch.

2.The Flaming Lips – This Here Giraffe (1996)
The Flaming Lips’ band comes together for a surreal look into everyday life in this eclectic music video. Starring Wayne Coin, the lead singer of the group, Coppola takes a minimalistic approach to filmmaking, focusing on the guitar skills of the lead and adds a live giraffe to drive home the point of the music video.
3. The White Stripes – I don’t know what to do with myself (2003)
Coppola’s vision is sexy and short. A girl dances on a suspended block then strips on a pole while Jack White, singer of the White Stripes, delivers heavenly vocals from the background. In black and white, this video is an homage to black and white filmmaking and simple aesthetics.
4. Phoenix – Chloroform (2013)
This video rocks. It is a trippy visual experience. It films fans while they watch the performance of Chloroform by the group Phoenix. Apart from Phoenix being indie legends who emulate the sound of The Beatles, Coppola’s storytelling brings out the beauty of people’s shifting emotions as they listen.
5. Dior: Miss Dior Cherie (2009)
Dior releases a sexy commercial starring Maryna Linchuk, promoting the new fragrance, Cherie. Sophia Coppola follows Linchuk around Paris while she shops and goes sightseeing. The video is sweet and to the point and highlights Linchuk’s beauty and the fashionability of the brand.
5A. Dior: Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet (2013)
Here is another Dior spot by Coppola that is awesome. It’s a photoshoot with Natalie Portman. It opens with her on a stairwell, modeling in fierce poses. It’s a must-watch for Coppola and Portman fans.
