Pop star and professional boundary-pusher Tove Lo is known for her slinky, sexy sound and matching music videos. However, with new single “des fleurs,” the singer displays a new kind of sensuality, pairing her pleas to an indifferent lover with fantastical vintage-inspired imagery.
“Bring me flowers // bring your sweat to my bed tonight,” Tove Lo demands of her partner on the track, declaring that he’s “man enough” to “last for hours.” However, instead of pairing these direct lyrics with matching visuals, director Melchior Leroux turns the music video into an homage to the art style of silent films.
The video features black-and-white images and videos, along with desaturated colors that bring to mind faded photos of days gone by. Leroux fills the video with fantastical images, from a sexy matador standing on top of a waterfall, to a couple embracing under a giant rose.
French rapper Stromae, who is featured on the single, delivers a pitch-perfect verse responding to Tove Lo’s accusations — “I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but I’m not the worst of lovers,” he states (translated from the original French). “I’d like us to have a good time.”
The video’s vintage feel makes the seductive single all the more alluring, twisting sweet, whimsical images into something more.
