SEE HOW THEY RUN – IS IT
Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, Ruth Wilson +
It’s the 1950s and a down-on-his-luck Hollywood producer comes to London to adapt a popular West End play for the big screen. However, when members of the production start being murdered, seen-it-all before Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and ambitious rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take the case. The two detectives find themselves in the midst of one of the most puzzling mysteries, set against the backdrop of the glitz and glamour, as well as the seedy underbelly of the London theatre.
Ever since the massive success of Knives Out, there has been a public hankering for more whodunit mysteries, and See How They Run promises to be another great entry in the recent spate of star-studded murder mystery comedies. Whodunit movies had their heyday during the 1930s in Hollywood, before being replaced with the more hard-boiled detectives of the 1940’s Film Noirs. Like with many genres, the whodunit got its start in literature. Specifically, in British novels that came out between the two World Wars. They are notable for featuring an eccentric detective, often an amateur one at that, who solves crimes in their own unconventional manner. The reveal of the killer is saved for the end of the film. Red herrings are peppered along the way to throw the audience off as to the true identity of the murderer. The structure, in addition to often giving the reader or viewer an entertaining protagonist in its zany crime solver, also allows you in on the action.
See How They Run was directed by Tom George, from a script written by Mark Chappell. In addition to Rockwell and Ronan, it stars David Oyelowo, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, and Harris Dickinson. See How They Run is currently in post-production and expected to come out sometime in 2022.
