FKA Twigs surprised everyone when she dropped new mixtape”Caprisongs” earlier this month. The artist is already earning critical acclaim for the new music, with some calling it her best work yet.

The 17-track mixtape contains features from artists like The Weeknd, Daniel Caesar, and Jorja Smith, to name a few. The featured artists aren’t the only new voices; while Twigs is known for her classically-trained falsetto, she plays around with different tones and cadences with the new music.

“Caprisongs” is her first work since 2019’s “Magdalene,” a deeply emotional work that examined the raw emotions of heartbreak, loneliness, and health challenges. The new mixtape is a complete 180, centered around the joys in her life, like nights out with her friends.

“Wanna dance you out of my, gotta dance you out of my hips, my thighs, my wrongs, my rights,” she sings on “Tears in the Club,” the collab with The Weeknd. “Caprisongs” shows how Twigs has moved past pain and onto the rest of her life.

There are still moments of doubt mixed in with her new outlook; “I want to be more confident, I really do,” she sings in “Meta Angel”, before the chorus hits: “I’ve got voices in my head telling me that I won’t make it far.”

The project is constructed like a true mixtape, complete with “record” button clicks at the beginning of each song. It’s also dotted with sound bites from people close to her; “Fuck crying over stupid boys who don’t even recognize the worth in themselves,” a voice states at the end of “Oh My Love.”

“Caprisongs” is one of FKA Twigs’ most interesting projects to date, which is impressive, considering her long history of boundary-pushing. Check it out here!
